Sara Farinas Mateos

Mrs. FarinasSara Farinas Mateos is beginning her third year at Smith Academy and has been working in education since 2009. She earned a Foreign Language Teacher degree from the University of Leon.

Mrs. Farinas Mateos is from Leon, Spain and is interested in music and dance. Rosatiun Pilcher and Barbara Wood are two of her favorite authors.

She is curious about new cultures, visiting new countries, and different educational systems.

Laura Hastings

Mrs. HastingsLaura Hastings previously worked at Smith from 1996 - 2004 and returned in 2015. She has been working in education since 1986. She has a Bachelors of Science Degree in Elementary Education from Lamar University.

Mrs. Hastings is from Beaumont, Texas and enjoys building outdoor furniture, watching the NFL, reading, and exercising. Some of her favorite books include the Janet Evanovich number series.

She is curious about weather.

Rocio Ruiz

Ms. RuizRocio Ruiz is beginning her third year at Smith Academy and has been working in education since 2011. She earned a Bachelors Degree in Bilingual Education from the University of Houston Downtown.

Ms. Ruiz is from the State of Guanajuato, Mexico and is interested in Latin music and dance, fitness and health, and is a ZUMBA instructor. Some of her favorite books include Esparanza Rising and Dr. Seuss books. 

She is curious about how to create a relationship with her students and meeting new people to work as a team.

Sandra Salas


Ms. SalasSandra Salas is beginning her third year here at Smith Academy and has been working in education since 2008. She has earned a Bachelors in Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of Houston Downtown.


Ms. Salas was born in Mexico and is interested in family, movies, painting, reading, art, music, and shopping. Some of her favorite books include Aura by Carlos Fuentes and Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak.

She is curious about different cultures, languages, skydiving, and traveling.

Jennifer Teel

Ms. Teel

Jennifer Teel is beginning her second year at Smith Academy and has been working in education since 2013. She received her Bachelors from Sam Houston State University.

Ms. Teel is from San Mateo, California and is interested in volunteering at church, being outdoors, and spending time with family. Some of her favorite books include A Case for Christ by Lee Strobel and The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis.

She is curious about psychology, the quality of human life, and ways to develop safe communities.

Ashley Wilson

Ms. WilsonAshley Wilson is has been working at Smith Academy since 2015. She earned a Bachelor Degree in Elementary Education with Minors in Reading & Spanish from Ball State University.

Ms. Wilson is from Nashville, Indiana and is interested in hiking, canoeing, creative writing, and blogging. Some of her favorite books include You Are Special by Max Lucado and The Other Side by Jaqueline Woodson.

She is curious about how to help people live life to their fullest potential and learning how the world works.
